Q7. Looking back on your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

WHAT WAS THE PRELIMINARY TASK?

The preliminary task was posted onto the Blog during January 2017 therefore, it was produced and filmed near to the start of the year. Therefore, this states this was quite a while ago so, it will suggest that as a group and individuals we had learnt some basic camera skills however, this task juxtaposed with the final film will reflect that we have progressed with our skills and experiences upon the use of camera work. This task was to show a character opening a door through the use of a close - up, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite the other character in order that, she will conduct a couple of lines of dialogue that will follow on throughout the two protagonists therefore, it is continuous.
The preliminary exercise was a continuity task which involved film and editing. However, we had to follow certain rules of constant shot reverse shots, match on action and to not break the 180* line of action. Furthermore, I have learnt the different shot types and what they mean within this task. Shot reverse shots were consistently used within the spoken conversation face to face. It explored that we were presenting different types of cinematography such as a two – level shot as both protagonists were at the same level suggesting that they have the same amount of power also, medium close – ups to establish the characters from the waist upwards and off shoulder shots focusing upon one person then flipping to the other therefore, it is alternative between each of the protagonists. Whereas, I have also learnt that match on action is a film or video editing technique used for continuity editing in which one shot automatically cuts to another shot reflecting the action in between therefore, it engages the reader more. It gives a sense of continuous time when the film is edited and you re watch it. This is conducted by using movements such as, characters walking so that things are hidden from the audience. Therefore, the brain automatically adapts to the actor walking. The 180* line of action is a guideline when filming within a scene or conversation therefore, this indicates the actors must have the same either left or right relationship to each other but only at 180*.

These aspects of continuity are relevant throughout the final film 'Twisted' especially the 180* rule line due to the fact that, it allows the audience to have a greater sense of location. In addition, within my film I have also used shot reverse shots to reflect both protagonists are in danger therefore, they are running to escape from the horrific situation. Also, I have used a two level shot whilst the female characters are sat in the car driving along the road again, to support the idea that they have the same amount of power and position. However, I believe I have developed in my filming skills as well as acting due to the fact that, I was a character in the preliminary task as well as the final film produced between myself and Jodie.

DVD Cover Idea
Below is an idea I considered for a DVD cover for Twisted. By taking my own images and editing these and placed them upon a template, alongside the BBFC rating 15, with our JM PRODUCTIONS logo, and our distributor Warp Films, the font originates from DAFONT.COM.

Difficulty's we faced...
During filming we spent a various amout of weeks to create this pychopathic slasher horror film. During this process we found multiple errors  which needed to be fixed therefore, we could prevent them by using alternative shot types or editing techniques to create an effective outcome.

Various problems we faced within the group, were particularly when two of the other members left just before filming took place therefore, this disadvantaged us greatly due to minimal input from them. Although, this left us in a time of difficultly we managed to take control of the situation finding two other cast members to take part in the movie. Therefore, this was a great deal as it helped to mangage the situation.

The continuity of the film was a major problem due to having to film on different days and lighting and other aspects had changed slightly, also little items such as a new car air freshener affected this, to cover certain mishaps we cropped shots and reshot many, which we found time consuming, affecting the length of our film as a whole. Certain shots we found difficult included the crash shot, as we couldn't do this without specialist equipment and editing, therefore used a previous shot to crop and speed up with fast paced editing to create a crash like effect.

The diegetic sound was difficult due to not being able to use certain eerie songs, due to copyright, therefore we edited in a soundtrack off free sound, which we found extremely helpful. We also had to change location due to having unexposed light, which was dramatically dark, making it hard to vision anything on the camera, therefore we found a new location with minimal artificial light which provided just enough to clearly shoot, however still gave a dismal effect.

Overall, our film proved to reveal great difficulties we tried our best to overcome to create an outcome of a professional standard.
Aspects Of Costume Explored
Below are images I have edited to explore different shots of costume, with the mask used during production, of which covers a persons identity. Below are shots which can be used for advertisement purposes, for example on posters, bus banners, tie in's, games and website covers to promote and receive publicity.

Research into possible UK independent Distributors

Arrow films is an independent UK distributor that focus upon specific genres such as, horror, classic and cult films via DVD/Blu - ray and many TV series. Furthermore, it was established during the year of 1991. This distributor is recorded to be one of the UK's leading independent distributors for world cinemas, horror and many more films. However, this distributor supports our genre and film as our film portrays conventions of slasher horror likewise to Arrow Films. As the films they distribute are small and independent this reflects they will have a smaller target audience therefore, this is similar to our film. Also, as their target audience is small they'll receive a low budget as many low - key actors are involved and they tend to film on location. On the other hand, for many years Arrow films have been very successful due to the fact that they have managed to work with some outstanding directors such as, Denys Arcand, Tinto Brass and Luis Bunuel. This is beneficial for Arrow Films as it helps them to gain a higher income. Arrow films have also been successful in distributing films as they have won the Academy award during 2009 for the film, Departures.

Altitude is another UK independent film distributor that was produced in May 2012. The film company was founded and is led by Will Clarke. Altitude have been successful over many years especially with their first release during 2014 with the documentary, '20 feet from Stardom' that managed to gain an Oscar winning therefore, this was beneficial for the company as it helped them to gain more financial support. Likewise to Arrow Films, it will contain a small target audience therefore, the budget will be low as it is an independent film. However, to help gain support and an increase in income, Altitude produced a biopic film called Amy during 2015. This reflected the life about the famous singer Amy Winehouse in addition, this was a huge film produced by the film company therefore, it was released into cinemas within the UK on 3rd July 2015.

Warp films is another example to focus upon UK independent films produced. This company is a television company as well as an independent film producers. The company are normally based on location, within areas such as, Sheffield, London and the UK. Although, Warp films have managed to reach Australia and produce films within, Melbourne. Warp films was originally founded by Rob Mitchell and Steve Beckett however, the company was established by Warp Records, which is an English independent record label. Warp films have been successful as they have won many awards for example, they won an award for the best short film, 'My wrongs#8245-8249' that was shot during 2002 and filmed by Chris Morris. After the film was produced, it managed to become the first short film DVD single within the UK market. Warp films have been producing many more successful films throughout the years such as, 71' and This is England.

 Research Into Possible Distributors

Arrow films distribute a vast amount horror films, the majority of the films they distribute being around a certificate of 15 to 18, making them one of the UK's leading independent distributors. Most of the films they distribute are small independent films with a similar target audience to ours, a small distributor,  rather than the likes of a larger company such as Warner Bros, of who distribute wider global movies, with a larger budget. Arrow Films are an all-rights reserved distributor of films and TV series, they specialise in releasing worldwide content to the UK and onward, and were established in 1991. They have been named label of the year by prestigious publications, as they restore originals.

Vertigo films, a UK film distribution company, founded in 2002 with the ambition to create and distribute commercially driven independent cinema features. Distributions by vertigo films started in 2004 with the Lionsgate's production of  "A good woman" and "Pusher 2" directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, this triggered further distributions, due to great success. Again, being an independent company, they allow a distribution to smaller companies, much like ours JM Productions, as most movies they distribute are independent, with small budgets.

Warp Films are an independent UK film company, based in Sheffield and London having another branch company based in Melbourne, Australia. Films which they have published include This Is England and 71’. This distribution company is known for attracting smaller demographics therefore it would appeal to our film, as it has a niche audience base, due to being a slasher/horror. Warp Films were established by Rob Mitchell and Steve Beckett. This company is known to work alongside television programmers as well as an independent films.

Roles Of Possible Distributor To Consider:
  • The number of film prints made to be released to the exhibitors/cinemas decided
  • When the prints should be made available to cinemas
  • Arrangement of transportation of the prints to cinemas, and areas which transported to
  • Providing trailers and publicity material for cinemas
  • Advertisement to actually promote the film
  • Arranging promotional tie in's with the film
  • Submitting the film for certification
  • Whether the company is suitable to distribute independent films, with micro budgets
  • Whether the company is successful in distributing highly rated movies to ensure success of the material
  • Whether a big six company may be a major risk, due to material being unpublished or a loss a revenue
  • Acquiring the film itself
