Treatment 2

  • Title: 'Twisted.' This title implies that it is a natural way of the protagonists, to portray an unpleasant and abnormal way of thinking. It creates an interesting and effective atmosphere and could suggest tension upon the viewers.

  • Duration: The duration of the short film will be around two or three minutes in order to set the scene and create a horrific atomosphere. Furthermore, it will indicate the different roles between the characters and show a contrast between how the characters react within the film. Also, the film explores different horrific aspects such as, voilence, threat and danger therefore, creating tension upon the viewers and showing that the characters feel anxious and frightened.

  • Audience/Certificate: The audience would generally be teenagers therefore, the certificate of the film would be a 15 due to the voilent and sadistic scenes within. In addition, the film contains offensive language therefore, this could affect younger viewers as it is disturbing. Also, the film contains threatening, horrific and scary scenes that could make the audience feel uncomfortable and tense. We also decided the film to be a 15 due to the clown within the film and due to the ending as he captures one of the girl characters therefore, this reflects that younger audiences could feel threatened and terrified.

  • Distributed: The film is produced by Megan Blackburn and Jodie Taylor whereas, it is distributed by Arrow films. Personally, we believe that Arrow films would be a good distributer as they generally distribute many effective horror films therefore, this links with our film, 'Twisted'. Furthermore, the majority of their films they tend to distribute are rated within 15 - 18 again, this links in with our film. However, most of the films they distribute are normally small and independent films that contain a similar target audience to ours. A benefit of having a small and independent distribution would be that they are highly likely to distribute our film rather than a large multi - millionaire company such as, Time warner or Warner Bros. Our film links effectively with Arrow films therefore, this is beneficial due to the fact that, they have an all rights distributor of films and multiple TV series.

  • Storyline: Within the first few seconds the main protagonists are framed within the car, in a cheerful atmosphere whilst sat dancing with diegetic music playing and driving down a dark but, peaceful road. First of all, this would reflect to the viewer that the film is quite placid. However, as the film progresses we come to an emergency stop due to a psychopathic clown killer suddenly appearing at the side of the road frequently swinging a baseball bat. Instantly, this would engage the viewer more and create tension. The clown is represented to be dressed horrificly and frightening in order to scare the audience. Therefore, the character playing the role of the clown will be wearing a terrifying clown mask to cover his identity and to compose his hidden personal appearance. In addition, the clown will be wearing a tracksuit to reflect a casual but strange way of addressing himself as a clown. Tension builds up upon the protagonists and the audience therefore, they begin to feel anxious and worried resulting in something happening nearer to the end of the film. As the teenagers feel fear whilst sat in danger in the car the clown is slowly strolling around the car and starts banging on the window of the front window. Afterwards, as the teenagers have seen the clown they each scramble out of the car in shock and desperation to get away therefore, they run in different directions to escape. At the ending of the film the clown manages to capture one of the teenage girls and grab them from a back angle and drag them from their surrounding therefore, this portrays theb clowns sense of authority and power over the teenage girls. The film finishes with two of the girls having escaped and the other being captured whereas, as the car is abandoned the clown ends up in the back of the car.
  • Suggested elements: A suggested element throughout the film is that it contains a psychopathic killer clown. This is effective and interesting as it engages the audience and creates tension upon them. Also, the clown contains a horrific mask therefore, this shows he is hiding his identity so, this is a specific element due to the fact that, it represents the clown as scary. Another suggested element within the film is the darkness to signify a dull and petrifying atmosphere. Also, the darkness is symbolic as it could suggest death or mystery as the clown manages to grab one of the teenage girls. Furthermore, is represents something mysterious as we cannot see in the dark therefore, we don't know whats surrounding us. Also, it shows something scary is going to happen therefore, it creates fear upon the audience. Similarily, this is juxtaposed with the surrounding as it presented in a dark road therefore, reflecting that it is a horror film. Another element could be the use of low key lighting to suggest a warm and unpleasant surrounding. It could indicate a sense of action and capture various anxious and frightened expressions throughout the film formed by the main protagonists suffering from the horrific scenes.

Title Sequence

American Horror Story (2011)

Plot: It is an anthology series that focuses upon different characters and locations to create interesting effects. Furthermore, it includes a house consisting of a murderous past, insane asylum, a witch coven, a freak show, a hotel and a sinister farmhouse.

This first image taken from the popular series, American Horror Story, shows the creators of this. Furthermore, it creates an interesting effect due to the type of graphology used which creates tension and suspense upon the viewers. The graphology is white so it looks to be standing out, as it is imprinted on to a black background. Also, the white usually symbolises light, hope, purity and safety as opposed to black therefore, it juxtaposes them. Black has connotations of darkness and death therefore, this could create tension upon the viewers. Within this, you can see a new image starting to appear therefore, it could portray a horrific scene is going to occur. If you look closely, the writing looks to be slightly tilted therefore, the audience feel disorientated. Although, it looks to be presenting a shadow within the lighting which could create tension and suspense as it could hint to the audience that something mysterious will happen. The font is presented to be bold and huge in order to create emphasise and appeals towards the viewer. Also, as the screen just displays the text it makes the audience focus upon the key aspects upon who created the film. As this image is shown within the sequence non - diegetic music is used which is quite upbeat and fast paced to create a frightening and sinister tone which supports the horror conventions.

This image taken from the sequence, reflects the use of props however, juxtaposed with this is blood stains which further supports the genre of horror. Some props that are relevant within this image could represent a sense of danger and threat towards certain victims within the programme. In addition, to further reflect the danger the red blood stains have negative connotations leading towards death, insecurity and a sense of action. Therefore, this could suggest that within the sequence there is a murderer involved which links to the narrative due to the past of the characters being quite horrific and brutal so, this could indicate that the clip contains various sadistic scenes throughout. The lighting is portrayed to be low key as it presents a dramatic atmosphere however, it illuminates to the shadowed areas in order to form a contrast. Fast paced editing is used in order to capture a quick glimpse of the composed secrets within the murderer however, it hides the concepts of the props used. On the other hand, it could also hide the murderers sense of belonging.

This image taken from the sequence represents an isolated and compact room which is evident through the window as a light source. The use of this light source helps to capture the dull, and frightening locations portrayed throughout. Here, an establishing shot is used to create setting and portray the darkness within also, it depicts the dismal and bleak mood. This sense of mood could foreshadow that something mysterious however, monstrous might occur therefore, it engages the viewer as they could feel fear, as tension is beginning to build upon them. On the other hand, the audience could feel disturbed and uncomfortable as they are unaware as to what will happen later on. Within many horror films darkness is symbolic due to the fact that it portrays death therefore, it shows personal thoughts upon this for example, feeling scared and anxious.

Title sequence

Se7en(1995)
The plot of the horror movie revolves around two homocide detectives on a desperate hunt for a  twisted serial killer who justifies his crimes as a absoultion for the worlds ignorance of the seven deadly sins. The movie moves across different torture victims from one to the next, showing his planned journey of his kill.

The first image shown  is taken from se7ens title sequence, displaying the introduction of the movie through the disorted text 'new line cinema presents' along with a book blocking the lense of the camera, with low key lighting presented within the background and the shadow foreshadowing something repulsive is going to occur. The white text stands out against the dark background, along with dismel lighting to create mystery and outline shadows to create such fear this sort of genre of horror would elict. The book is positioned closer to the lense and is in focus in comparison to further back in the image, the shadow is out of focus to present a sense of unclear obscure vision, a sense of phycological fearful feeling. The filter on the camera is slightly coloured to present a past period of time, as it is slightly brown and worn, much like the book is in the shot.
The second image is taken from the title sequence, displaying disorted text in capitlasation making the typographical features stand out as they are in white text against a darker black background, making the auidence focus on the text and nothing else within the still. Parts of the writing are in a different font to emphasise the name of the production company. The text is slanted and almost blurred and eriee to link in with the genre of the movie horror and make the auidence feek disorientated and unstable. Black is a commion colour used within horror to elict emotions regarding death, mystery, fear and evil.

The third image is taken from the title sequence, displaying a dark shadow cowering over a drawing of two life like hands however disorted, one lighter than the other, almost postioned as though they are grasping onto something, part exactly into two sections. The drawing is neat and to scale, as it has squared paper behind it to help keep the drawing to scale, suggesting the antagonist is well ordered and well proportioned. The hands appear to look old and veiny, foreshadowing further events in the film, as the image has a abnormal feel as the fingers of the hands are bent, as though they have been broken. The lighting is low key, however dim to present an image and elict discomfort to the audience. They appear to be life sized, as though drawn from a victims hands.

The forth image taken, displays a completely dark background with the only feature of light being the typographical features of the famous actor 'Brad Pitt'. This allows the viewers to have an insight into the cast members, as he is a particularly famous actor, creating a sense of thrill for the movies beginning. This again follows the purpose of a title sequence, as it introduces key information, allowing a mention to the involving members of production, alongside images to foreshadow the occurrences in the movie itself. The text itself is almost distorted and separated, contrasting well on black background, being a white based font. Black and white again are common colours used in the genre of horror/thriller as they achieve a sense of basic however hidden and mysterious meaning. Being the only feature on the screen, the actors name is eye catching, grasping viewers attention, reflecting the importance of perhaps a main protagonist.

The fifth image taken, displays a lined book, holding unseen text, fast paced edited to hide what may be seen as part of the plot. A shallow focus is used to hide certain concepts of the text and character, to again highlight a sense of anticipation. However hard to depict, the mans hand features again in the shot, however blurred by the shallow focus to almost hide his identity, following conventions of typical horror/thriller movies, as the main protagonist is usually hidden or framed from an angle to avoid facial qualities, adding to the apprehension.

The sixth shot taken, features the lined book, however the mans hand has moved to create more text, as the plan develops onwards. A close up of his hand allows the viewers to visualize his nails and skin particles almost, as his fingers are fully in focus, however the book again is captured in a shallow focus, alongside the rest of his hand in a darkened shadow. The pen is shown to progress movement, as it is shown as a double shadowed image, moving across the page via a transition of a dissolve. A feature of a member in production is again shown in white, connecting with the rest of the typo graphic's and is shown on the darkest part of the screen to allow contrast.

Throughout the title sequence, different transitions allow a change in imagery to foreshow parts of the plot, alongside sinister non diegetic sound, for example music powered by noises adding to the atmosphere for example a razor and screeching sound, alongside loud background noises and dramatic rock like singing towards the ending of the sequence.

Futhermore, the clown's costume is a tracksuit to cover their identity which reflects he is untidy whereas, the mask is to further emphasises this however, it also shows their sense of power and causes a threat towards other characters and the audience.
